"The Zookeeper's Wife," the latest film from director Niki Caro ("Whale Rider"), is perhaps one of the most unknown historical dramas that took place during World War II and forms part of the canon of Holocaust films. The drama is a bit uneven but the story is quite inspiring.

This relatively unreported atrocity persists for the 1 million residents of the Nuba Mountains. "The Heart of Nuba," a new documentary film, tells the story of the region's one doctor and his efforts to bring healing and love to the Nuba people.

Marriage is an institution in crisis in our society right now. Our young people need examples of people who remain faithful to their love and their marriage vows through all life throws at them: in good times and in bad, as the vows say. “A United Kingdom” is a film that provides such an example in an inspiring true story.

Based on the non-fiction book, "A Long Way Home," by Saroo Brierley with Larry Buttrose, the Oscar-nominated film, “Lion” tells the heartrending story of 5-year-old, Saroo (Sunny Pawar), who accidentally becomes lost on a train in India and ends up 1,500 kilometers from his home.

On April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon resulting in the deaths of three people—one an eight-year-old boy—and the maiming of hundreds. The four-day manhunt that followed resulted in the death of one of the suspects and the arrest of the other. The events of this day have been dramatized in “Patriots Day,” directed by Peter Berg.

Just imagine three African-American women on the side of the road, their car broken down. It’s Hampton, Virgina in 1961 and a white police officer pulls over, suspicious. Once he hears they work for NASA, he changes his tune and offers them an escort so they won’t be late for work. As she’s driving, one of the women exclaims, “Three Negro women are chasing a white police officer down the highway in 1961. That is a God-ordained miracle.”

Set in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of JFK, “Jackie,” is not your usual biopic. The film flits from point to point with no apparent logic but isn’t that what grief is like? That’s what we see here, a woman who has witnessed the brutal murder of her husband, only to have to shoulder, not only her own grief, but that of an entire nation.

"Loving," the latest film from director, Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special, Mud), shares the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), a married couple who fought for the right to live together in the 1960’s.

Mel Gibson has done it again. "Hacksaw Ridge" is the cinematic event of 2016-2017. "HR" is the true story of Private Desmond Doss, a Seventh-Day Adventist from Virginia who enlists in World War II, but--as a conscientious objector--staunchly refuses to bear arms. Literally. He won't even touch a gun, let alone go through the required rifle training. His dream is to be a medic and save lives.

A new film aptly entitled "Denial"--about a famous Holocaust-denial court case--is a jewel.
