MISSION STATEMENT:

To develop and encourage Media Mindfulness

within the context of culture, education,

and faith formation.

Sr. Hosea Rupprecht, FSP, welcomes you to the online website for the Pauline Center for Media Studies

“For believers and people of good will,
entertainment and information media have the potential to bring
the human family closer together in justice and peace.”
- Our Media World

The Pauline Center for Media Studies (PCMS) is a project of the Daughters of St. Paul. Its focus is to develop and encourage media literacy/media mindfulness within the context of culture, education, and faith formation.

The PCMS, founded by Sister Rose Pacatte, FSP, began in Boston in 1995 and moved to Los Angeles in 2006. In 2015, an East Coast office opened in New York, directed by Sister Hosea Rupprecht, FSP. The PCMS expresses a part of the mission of the Daughters of St. Paul to educate and form the audience to critically discern the messages communicated through traditional mass media and emerging forms of social communication.

“In her official teaching, the Church
has consistently called media, ‘gifts of God.’ ”

- Sr. Hosea Rupprecht, FSP

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and participate with messages in a variety of forms, from print to video to the Internet. At the heart of media literacy is a strategy that questions media messages. Because we live in a world shaped by media values, messages, and technologies, media literacy is an educational and faith formation imperative for the 21st century.

Control is for the moment. Communication lasts a lifetime.”
- Sr. Rose Pacatte, FSP

In a faith context, we progress from media literacy to media mindfulness, using critical thinking skills and questioning the media to discern the values and ideologies of media messages and engage them with the values presented by Jesus. Media mindfulness helps kids, teens and grown-ups investigate culture, understand their world and make media choices consistent with their faith.

“Media mindfulness skills can empower young people to be wise consumers and producers of media.” ”

The Daughters of Saint Paul are an international congregation of women religious who are called, consecrated, and sent to evangelize with the media in the spirit of Saint Paul. Over 2,500 Sisters carry out the Pauline mission in 52 nations, under the name Pauline Books and Media in the English-speaking world.

The Sisters' contemplative Eucharistic prayer, combined with their demanding media mission, nurtures a profound spirit of faith and reflection that they bring to their use of media.

The Pauline Center for Media Studies (PCMS) is a mission project of the Daughters of St. Paul focused on developing and encouraging media literacy/media mindfulness within culture, education, and faith formation. In media mindfulness, we use critical thinking skills to question the media and discern the values of media messages, engaging them with the Gospel.

The Pauline Center for Media Studies is located in Los Angeles, CA, and New York, NY.

As a seminarian, Blessed James Alberione received the inspiration to use the media to evangelize. He founded the Daughters of St. Paul in 1915, with co-foundress Venerable Mother Thecla Merlo. He gave them the mission: “Live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life in its entirety, in the spirit of Saint Paul, under the gaze of the Queen of Apostles.”

In 1932, the Pauline Sisters began their mission in the U.S., and in 1952, in Canada.
